A Silent Prayer Transcending Sorrow.
Urabe is an illustrator and artist from Okinawa, a southern island of Japan. URABE possesses a unique background, having initially studied Computer Design in high school and Information Engineering at university.
This academic path was abruptly cut short when URABE was diagnosed with the rare disease Fibromyalgia, leading to five years of complete bedridden confinement. During this period, the artist explored inner worlds by writing short fiction based on dreams and fantasies.
The artistic path began when a vivid image suddenly appeared during sleep—a moment URABE regards as a "Profound Revelation."
URABE's philosophy is rooted in the conviction that art is a prayer, not a salvation. Through the crucible of illness, the artist learned to believe in the inherent strength within the human spirit as the source of self-redemption.
The resulting artwork does not aim to save or alter one's feelings, but rather to be a gentle presence—like a well-worn, comfortable blanket—quietly affirming existence and offering solace.
Driven by this revelation, URABE has continuously developed the "Magnificent Yomi Series" for five years. The spin-off series, "The Night Country," submitted to the Bologna Children's Book Fair, depicts the serene landscape where departed souls find renewal. Furthermore, the series "Yoki's Dream Journey - DayBreakTrip," inspired by the artist's experiences with insomnia and depression, has been featured in the Illustration category on Behance.
URABE is also recognized in the digital art space, having successfully passed the stringent selection process for the NFT platform SuperRare, placing the artist among the world's top-tier digital artists.
Currently, I am participating in the Illustrators Exhibition of the Bologna Children's Book Fair.
日本の南の島、沖縄県生まれ。高校でコンピューターデザインを学び、大学では情報工学を専攻。修士課程に進むも、難病である線維筋痛症を発症し退学。その後5年間にわたり寝たきり生活を送る。この期間、夢や空想の世界を基に短編小説を執筆することで、内なる世界を探求する。
ある日、就寝中に突然、現在の画風の元となるイメージが「啓示」のように現れ、イラストレーターとしての制作活動を開始する。
ウラベの作品哲学は、「絵は祈りであり、救いではない」という信念に基づいている。難病との闘いから得た学びとして、人間は己の中の強さで己を救えるという考えを持ち、神に依るのではなく、人間の根源的な力に焦点を当てる。
その絵が目指すのは、誰かを救済したり気持ちを変えたりするものではなく、長年使い込まれた「くたくたの毛布」のように、そっと寄り添い、その存在を認めることである。
この啓示を受けて以来、5年間にわたり「マグニフィセント・ヨミ・シリーズ」を描き続けている。そこから派生した死と生の間を描く「夜の国」シリーズでは、旅立った魂が再生するまでの静謐な景色を描写。また、自身の不眠症とうつ状態の経験を反映した「Yoki's Dream Journey - DayBreakTrip」シリーズは、国際的なキュレーションサイトであるBehanceのイラストカテゴリでフューチャーされた。
デジタルアートの領域にも挑戦し、審査基準の厳しさで知られるNFTプラットフォーム SuperRareの審査を通過。世界トップレベルのアーティストとしてNFTアートの販売実績を持つ。
現在はボローニャ国際児童図書展のイラストレーターコンペに挑戦中である。
